My SGV Internship Story
By Rohaina Dansal
While May 2022 was the best month for others like the CPALE passers, it was the contrary for me. I lost two of my loved ones within that month. On top of that, the month of May was the final weeks of our 2nd semester in 3rd year. Things were really busy with all the upcoming exams, research paper defense, and complying requirements. There was even no time to breathe because we had to proceed to our summer classes with full units. During summer classes, while my batchmates were already talking about their target agencies and offices for our OJT requirement in the next semester (August), I didn't even worry about it.
They say when you lose something, God replaces it with good things. During our summer classes, the in-charge professor for our OJT messaged our batch GC an invitation letter from SGV for their SGV NLIP 2022. He said anyone can try to apply on the given link but only 10 will be chosen from our school. Upon reading it, I ignored it because there's no way I'll have the chance to be part of the chosen 10 given the number of competitive students in our department. Fast forward, days had passed and our professor reminded us on the deadline night. A friend messaged me if we should give it a try. In the end, we submitted our resume and other requirements at the last minute. Still, there are no expectations.
Here comes one morning in the dorm. I literally woke up on July 15, 2022 (Friday) at around 7AM, checked my phone, and read a text message from SGV. Imagine, if I did not even give it a try, how would I know that I had actually the chance? The screening process involves an essay test and I grabbed that chance to be selected by giving my best in the 150-word challenge. Fast forward, I got accepted. The flower who sailed without a map for her OJT suddenly got lucky. Indeed, a twist of fate can transpire when fortune favors the bold.
I am grateful to be part of the 350 interns nationwide for the second batch of the annual SGV Nurturing Leaders Internship Program (NLIP). My internship runs from August 30, 2022 to November 23, 2022. The internship has 2 phases. The first phase runs from August 30, 2022 to September 21, 2022. For the first phase, it was all about series of talking sessions and activities. In every group activity, I get to be grouped with interns from different big schools. Our activities involved Audit Simulations, FAAS Case Study, Tax Case Study, and Consulting Case Study.
Phase 2 of our internship is the Service Line Deployment. It runs from September 22, 2022 to November 23, 2022. I was deployed to the Assurance service line under the Market Group 7 (MG7) or Natural Resource and Services which I found interesting. Each of us has our assigned managers to supervise us. Since it was an online setup, I always received video meeting calls from my manager and seniors to talk about the possible tasks they could give me. There are days when I receive tasks and days with no calls. The tasks they gave me were (1) cleaning Excel entries, (2) tick marking, (3) Analysis of Selling & Admin Expenses, (4) GAM Global, and (5) rolling forward of financial statements.
On the culmination day, I never expected that I would be given the chance to fly to Manila for the first time during my college years by attending personally our culmination day in Makati City. Spending one week in Manila also gave us the chance with my MSU co-interns to stroll every night to random local attractions. During our culmination day, I met our stellar co-interns which I usually only see on screen during our internship. At the end of the day, each one of us received a paper and it was up to us if we sign up and pursue a career in SGV.
Being an Assurance intern taught me that realizing our purpose is essential in defining success and loving the path we trek. The experience made me appreciate the role of our profession in society as part of a collective effort of humanity to improve the quality of life. Uncertainties may be ahead of us, yet every little feat should be lived before it becomes just a memory. I am grateful to my manager, my Ates and Kuyas or seniors, and the talent team. Thank you SGV for the exceptional internship experience!
