A first-ever dialogue on security matters and ensuring the safety of students was held on October 28, 2019, at the Dimaporo Gymnasium, MSU Main Campus, Marawi City.
The dialogue was organized by the Supreme Student Government (SSG) as a result of the students’ concern for their security and safety after the fatal shooting incident of a freshman student on the premises of the Mindanao State University (MSU) Main campus on October 17, 2019.
The sudden death of a freshman student shook the stable stay of the MSUans within the premises of the university, especially, the non-Muslim students. It is not the first time in the historical cases of MSU that an incident like this has happened, leaving a commonality of failing to find the culprits and attain justice.
According to the SSG, the dialogue was
designed to Strengthen the Security of the constituents of Mindanao State
University. It was a dialogue that tackled the security measures inside the
campus and the counterpart of the constituents for their safety.
Present in the said dialogue were the MSU System President Habib W. Macaayong, DPA together with some University Officials, Heads of Units, College Deans, and representatives from the Armed Forces of Philippines (AFP) and Philippine National Police (PNP).
One of the highlights of the dialogue was the open forum where students were given the privilege to raise their concerns and questions to the panel members, which includes the AFP, PNP, MSU Main Department of Security Services, MSU Main Housing Division, MSU Main Legal Services Division, MSU System Officials that includes the MSU System President, and other concerning agencies.
Some of the inquiries being raised were the concerns about providing CCTV cameras around the campus, the activeness of the security units and any concerned offices, the provision of street lights at night, the dilemma on local transportation, and other concerns.
The president and other concerned officials responded accordingly to the open forum with the students as they laid down their thoughts and resolutions to the students. The Vice President for Academic Affairs and the mother of the University, Alma Berowa, also expresses her words to the students in response to the shooting incident of a freshman student and the security of MSU as a whole. As Ma’am Berowa said:
“Gusto po namin na magpatuloy ang Mindanao State University for a hundred years and beyond. Gusto namin na may pumunta pa dito na estudyante galing sa iba’t ibang probinsya ng Mindanao kasi iyan po ang mandato ng MSU. Lahat po ng Mindanaons ay may karapatan na mag-aral dito at kami po sa admin ay iyon ang inako naming responsibility, to provide protection and support for you. Pero po hindi naming kontrolado ang lahat ng bagay. Only God knows whatever happens for every minute of or lives.”
The event on Dialogue was concluded by
everyone singing the Himno ng Pamantasan. With the successful conduct of the
Dialogue, everybody was hoping for continuous peace and development in
enriching and nurturing the vision and future of Mindanao State University.
