The usual celebration of Foundation Day that MSUans tend to imagine has always been fun with those colorful parades, convivial cheers, and showcasing of talents, sportsmanship, and skills between the different competing colleges of the university. Yet this year has been different with the unprecedented change of fate caused by the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic. This predicament has transitioned the way we live our normal life into the so what we call as “new normal.”

Amidst this new normal, Mindanao State University has remained resilient and celebrated its 59th founding anniversary on September 1, 2020, along with the launching of the newly built administration building with the theme “MSU @59: Relentlessly Forging Ahead in the New Normal to Blaze New Paths through Quality Education.”

What made this event extra special was the inauguration of the new administration building which was named after the late Senator Ahmad Domocao A. Alonto, Sr., the founder of Mindanao State University. The event also highlighted the opening of Exhibit of the Life and Works of the late Sen. Alonto Sr. and MSU’s then and now. Before the event, a serenade took place in the morning at the house of MSU System President, Dr. Habib W. Macaayong, DPA. Also, there was a Ribbon Cutting of the Approach Road named Ahmad Domocao A. Alonto Avenue which will be the largest and longest road in the campus that covers the 4th street of MSU-ILS down to the Dimaporo Gymnasium.

In the opening remarks of President Macaayong, he shared one of his memories with former President Jun Alonto and mentioned how the former president performed well as one of the greatest presidents in Mindanao State University. A Posthumous Award for the Late Senator Ahmad Domacao A. Alonto, Sr. was also presented by President Macaayong to the ex-governor Bai Soraya Alonto Adiong.

For this year’s foundation day merged with the launching of Alonto, Sr. Hall, Honorable Mamintal “Bombit” Alonto Adiong, Jr. of the Alonto family and the Governor of the lone province of Lanao del Sur delivered his inaugural message as the guest of honor of the event. He talked about the exceptional and meaningful life and works of his grandfather whom the new administration building was named.

“Naming this landmark after him tells us that this place is important because he is important to our people. MSU is an educational institution, yes, but it is also our home in more ways than one.” Governor Adiong quoted in his speech.

“May his name now bound to be an everyday encounter for those who pass by MSU Main Campus, be a constant reminder of the work that needs to be done and the future that we are yet to build. Let us continue to walk in his footsteps, take pride in the legacy he has left behind, and work with humility towards the future he has dreamed for our people.” Governor Adiong added.

There were also testimonials coming from Hon. Ahod Balawag Ebrahim Alhaj, the Interim Chief Minister of BARMM, Hon. Pangalian M. Balindong, the speaker of the Bangsamoro Parliament, Senator Juan Miguel F. Zubiri, and Professor Datumanong A. Sarangani, the former executive vice president and regent of the pioneering batch.

The opening of the exhibition of the life and works of Alonto, Sr. was also graced with the presence of the Alonto family, Macaayong family, MSU officials, the deans and directors, and the exhibit committee. The Sining Kambayoka ensemble was also present at the event as they gave entertainment to the audience.

“As we continue to navigate the sea of challenges caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, this is the time for all of us as an academic institution to commemorate and consecrate once again our time-honored values of excellence, relevance, and diversity which have ushered MSU for 59 years as a prime institution of higher learning in the MINSUPALA region.

Amid this extraordinary public health crisis and under my leadership, let us transform this important time into a seedbed of opportunities for growth in the new normal. Together, let us continue our steps forward with a sense of hope in this age of uncertainties.” MSU System President Habib W. Macaayong quoted in his celebratory message.

[STORY] My SGV Internship Experience

My SGV Internship Story By Rohaina Dansal While May 2022 was the best month for others like the CPALE passers, it was the contrary for me. I lost two of my loved ones within that month. On top of that, the month of May was the final weeks of our 2nd semester in 3rd year. Things were really busy with all the upcoming exams, research paper defense, and complying requirements. There was even no time to breathe because we had to proceed to our summer classes with full units. During summer classes, while my batchmates were already talking about their target agencies and offices for our OJT requirement in the next semester (August), I didn't even worry about it.  They say when you lose something, God replaces it with good things. During our summer classes, the in-charge professor for our OJT messaged our batch GC an invitation letter from SGV for their SGV NLIP 2022. He said anyone can try to apply on the given link but only 10 will be chosen from our school. Upon reading it, I ignored i...
