A fever of enthusiasm and excitement veils the atmosphere of the four-cornered avenue of this momentous event. The Search for Datu and Bae of MSU is not your typical beauty pageant that focuses more on an individual’s talent and brain or wearing formal gowns and suits. It focused rather on the beauty of culture and showcasing diverse cultural heritage in Mindanao.

Mindanao State University, through the Supreme Student Government, initiated and made possible the first-ever search for Datu and Bae of MSU last March 7, 2020, at the Dimaporo Gymnasium with the theme “Culture: The Missing Link on Youth Empowerment.”

This year’s titled Datu and Bae of MSU are from the College of Business Administration and Accountancy. The first titled Datu of MSU representing the Iranun tribe was Mr. Mohammad Shoraym T. Casanguan, a BS Business Administration student. The first titled Bae of MSU representing the Meranao tribe was Miss Fathiya L. Linog, a BS Accountancy student.

According to the Supreme Student Government, the overall goal of the event is to bring awareness of the importance of cultural heritage as it fosters unity and diversity among the students of Mindanao State University. It also aims to inform, educate, and advocate the importance of culture, to foster understanding and appreciation of the different cultural heritage of the major tribes in Mindanao, and to facilitate transformative skills development among the youth for affirmative action.

The other candidates for this year’s search for Datu of MSU were Mr. Wedanie A. Motalib, Mr. Daryl B. Baliling, Mr. Emmanuel R. Escala, Mr. Abdul-Akim M. Pangompig, Mr. Najib P. Amer, and Mr. Mohammad C. Oti.

On the other hand, the candidates for the search for Bae at MSU were Miss Daisy Jane Wamilda, Miss Sahara I. Badal, Miss Sittie Joharah S. Alimpang, Miss Isnihaya A. Baruang, Miss Jhorelyn P. Virtudazo, and Miss Nur Tasneem A. Salih.

Before the pageant night, certain events occurred such as tree planting, a campus tour and courtesy visit with the different college deans and university offices, and a feeding program. Some of the judges during the pageant night were the Supervisor of Sining Kambayoka Ensemble, Pepito P. Sumayan, Board Member/President of Sangguniang Kabataan, Jeff Adiong, Mr. Sainuddin M. Muti, Director Linang Macabalang Cabugatan, PhD of Agakhan, and Head of Salimpokaw ko Masa Dance Troupe, Aaron Moh Rillo

“First of all, youth is the hope of the future. Youth is the hope of the culture. How do I champion this advocacy? I should learn more about my culture, more about my tribe, for as one of the youth, I am the one who will be able to further the knowledge to future generations.

And also, ignorance is the first death of the culture and I believe as bae, I should be the embodiment of my own culture, for my culture is my identity.” The titled Bae of MSU 2020 quoted in the question-and-answer portion when asked about how will she champion the advocacy for the preservation of culture among the youth.

“You know what, ladies and gentlemen, a lot of people are saying that we cannot preserve culture. Because our culture is morphing, and it is evolving. All we need to do is to deal with it and embrace the changes. But we can preserve our culture because we have empowered youth in the Philippines specifically here at MSU. There are many organizations here that promote culture by popularizing them, by letting them show the authentic qualities of their culture to others, and influencing them that wherever they are, they are bringing their culture, they are the representation of their culture, they are the real face of their culture and they are the culture itself.

Going back to the question of how I can champion the advocacy of preservation, firstly, I am gonna promote and educate the youth of this generation and tell them to preserve. Why? Because they are the future generations. Our culture is gradually fading and we cannot let that happen, right? We need youth to educate and equip the knowledge of our culture for them to pass it to future generations too. I believe that Education promotes holistic and lessens the impact of hostility.” The titled Datu of MSU 2020 quoted when asked the same question on how will he champion the advocacy on the preservation of culture among the youth.

[STORY] My SGV Internship Experience

My SGV Internship Story By Rohaina Dansal While May 2022 was the best month for others like the CPALE passers, it was the contrary for me. I lost two of my loved ones within that month. On top of that, the month of May was the final weeks of our 2nd semester in 3rd year. Things were really busy with all the upcoming exams, research paper defense, and complying requirements. There was even no time to breathe because we had to proceed to our summer classes with full units. During summer classes, while my batchmates were already talking about their target agencies and offices for our OJT requirement in the next semester (August), I didn't even worry about it.  They say when you lose something, God replaces it with good things. During our summer classes, the in-charge professor for our OJT messaged our batch GC an invitation letter from SGV for their SGV NLIP 2022. He said anyone can try to apply on the given link but only 10 will be chosen from our school. Upon reading it, I ignored i...
