The normal duration of the first semester in the university runs from August to December, and the second semester runs from January to May. However, unprecedented events, specifically, typhoon Odette have caused the university to extend the first semester until January this year. Despite this adjustment, the expected end of the second semester is still deemed to be in May. Is the second semester not compromised in this case?
Extending the first semester to January was unexpected for both the students and the professors and has caused changes to the second semester. Instead of the students finishing the first semester in December of 2021 and spending their holidays at ease, they still had the burden of the first semester to carry until the whole month of January. Students did not have that much break as well since they will move on directly to the start of the second semester in February.
The second semester was adjusted and set to start on February 7, 2022. However, as a student, we did not commence on the first and second week of the supposed start of classes. Even if the second semester will not be deemed compromised because of the adjusted calendar, there is still a chance that the target coverage of our courses will not be finished within the expected period of the second semester.
Based on the released new academic calendar, the second semester will run until the first week of June. In this case, there’s a possibility that it will also affect or cause a delay in the expected summer classes which normally range from June to July. If it affects the summer classes, it may also subsequently affect the starting date of the following new academic year, bestowing us a picture of an unusual pattern.
It is rational to think that extending the semester is just and fair to consider the MSU students from the CARAGA region who were mostly affected by Typhoon Odette. But even if there were no typhoons or natural disasters, this is not the first time that there have been irregularities in the normal periods of the semesters.
We can trace back that MSU Main started the first semester on September 9, 2021, while the other schools in Iligan City kicked off earlier than September. With this, while the other institutions or MSU system schools already started their classes, we were delayed by around one month. Moreover, while the other institutions ended their first semesters in December, we still had to finish the first semester in January.
The second semester was compromised by the moment the first semester was
extended. This is not yet including Ramadan which will occur in April, the
massive national elections in May, and the other upcoming holidays which could
further affect the second semester. Will we just get used to these
irregularities and glitches or can we overcome the unusual patterns and still
keep up with the other institutions?
