Decked out in their designated dress uniforms, are disciplined men who dazzled crowds and dignitaries with their acrobatic drill movements. They look dapper and diaphanous in their elegant suits and caps as they stand firm with pride and make meaningful motions with precision and passion while holding their rifles. They march with dignity and are led by their masters, but they act as a team when they move with the same principle.
It’s been a sort of arduous task that has taken hundreds of hours of preparation, hands-on instruction, and practical application. But it would be all worth it in the end as they mark an awe-inspiring performance to their live audience and as they showcase their skills, especially, during a competition like this year’s Silent Drill Competition in Iligan City.
It is already a tradition or annual event for Iliganons to witness every year, specifically, during the city’s Diyandi Festival, the most awaited Silent Drill Competition that’ll make the viewers amazed and wowed by the different performances of the drillers which were participated by students coming from different colleges and high schools within Northern Mindanao.
The 26th Diyandi Silent Drill Competition was held in Anahaw, Amphitheatre, Iligan City on September 27, 2017. It is divided into two categories, the college category and the high school category. There were at least 5 contenders under the college category and 3 contenders under the high school category. The participants under the college category were from St. Michael’s College (SMC), Southern Philippines College (SPC), St. Rita’s College of Balingasag (SRCB), Iligan Capitol College (ICC), and Misamis Oriental Institute of Science and Technology (MOIST). On the other hand, contenders under the high school category were Iligan City National High School (ICNHS), Hinaplanon National High School (HNHS), and Our Lady of Perpetual Help (OLPHA).
Like any other competition, the fight was close as every contender was strong-willed and courageous to win the title and bring honor and glory to their corresponding schools. Under the college category, garnering a total points of 99.53, ICC was recognized as the champion for this year’s Silent Drill Competition. SPC was held the 1st runner-up with 99.40 points and MOIST was held the 2nd runner-up with 99.33 points.
Under the high school category, garnering total points of 97.06, ICNHS was recognized as the champion for this year’s Silent Drill Competition. HNHS was held the 1st runner-up with 96.60 points and OLPHA was held the 2nd runner-up with 94.06 points.
For the special awards, under the college category, SRCB was recognized as the Best Marching Unit and Best in Chanting. On the other hand, HNHS was recognized as the Best Marching Unit, and ICNHS as the Best in Chanting under the high school category.
Each performance has made hundreds of movements, so in a show where continuity is the key, one mistake can cause catastrophe. Not every performance may be tagged as perfect, but don’t expect to see a break in their concentration when something unexpected happens. Thus, no one is too beyond from the other one, because all the drillers deserved to be praised as they all made a well-done performance that was worth watching for.
They were all drillers of discipline
and passion as well as agents of peace because of the symbolic formations and
impressive discipline they’ve showcased upon. Most especially, it’s not just
merely a competition, a passion, impressing the crowd, and bringing glory to
one’s school. It’s about promoting, giving another definition, and adding spark
and color to the true essence and beauty of the Diyandi Festival.
